The Okavango has a reputation as a place you cannot do cheaply. That is half true. You cannot do the fly-in concessions cheaply. You absolutely can do Moremi and the Delta's edge on a camping budget — and Moremi is, by most accounts, the best game-viewing part of the system.
The two routes at this level
Participation camps. A guided trip out of Maun where you help pitch, wash up and cook over the fire. You still have a professional guide and transport; the saving comes from your labour and from camping rather than a built lodge.
Self-drive camping in Moremi. Moremi is the only part of the Delta with a public road network, which is the entire reason a cheap Okavango trip is possible at all. You rent a 4x4, book a public campsite, and drive yourself. Cheaper still — but it requires the vehicle, the booking, and the self-sufficiency.
Three things that catch people out
- Campsites inside Moremi are few and book far ahead. Peak-season dates fill months in advance. Confirm the current booking channel with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks before building an itinerary around one.
- Vehicle requirements are not optional. Sand and seasonal water crossings mean a high-clearance 4x4, and many operators advise travelling in two vehicles rather than one. Recovery equipment is not an upsell.
- You are in the reserve, not a concession. No off-road driving, no night drives, and you will share sightings. That is the trade you are making, and it is a legitimate one — just not the same trip as a $3,000-a-night camp.
Where the money actually goes
At this level the biggest line items are usually the 4x4 rental and park fees rather than the accommodation. A camping trip can therefore end up closer to the mobile-safari band than the headline nightly rate suggests, once vehicle, fuel, fees and equipment are counted. Budget for the trip, not for the campsite.

Short participation trips and day activities out of Maun are widely bookable. Public campsite reservations run through Botswana's own channels — confirm the current procedure with the authority rather than relying on a reseller.
